Self-Sufficient Navigation and
Understanding of Any Library
Project Sketch
In the fourth grade library media classes, students will create, design, order, evaluate and clarify navigation and understanding of library organization and components. Through a series of standards based, integrated lessons woven with technology emphasis, students will know and understand a variety of library use skills. Students will experience first hand, through our district library media cataloging personal, the ins and outs of cataloging books for the library. They will create Dewey Decimal organization infomercials to be shared with younger grades. With interpretative characterizations, students will define informational texts in the reference section in a Guess What I Am game. Using a sample of books in the library, groups of students will create an excel spreadsheet and graph the data to determine if this representational sample reflects the library collection. An exercise in mapping will validate the transferability of one library layout to another and set the framework for the year of self sufficient navigation and understanding of any library. This unit is building upon skills and knowledge delivered in previous grade levels.
